body (parts)
the body, documented in fragments as a constellation across the gallery walls, display boxes and vitrines can be read in endless ways/ the artist’s embodied practice questions not only our understanding of our physical selves, but how we connect through body, mind and spirit to stories that are much larger/ two arms outstretched for the grasp of two hands, fingers that live forever alienated from the touch of another some of the works when viewed in isolation do not read as the body at all, rather they take on a map like quality and render the body as the land or the ocean/ other pieces, however, play with the absence of detail allowing the mind to imagine an x-ray, inspecting layer by layer through and beyond the surface of the skin/ remnants of sweat, sand and sticks are clues of a process that is both intuitive and performative/ the artist prepares the paper in the dark of night, which he covers and then transports in daytime/ the action of making the work occurs in a public space, the artist’s body making contact with the paper and the paper making contact with the land/ lastly, the work is washed in the nearest body of water, a fountain, a tap or a bottle to complete the cycle/
